Mary Stoiana defeated fellow American Claire Liu 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 32 at the WTA hard-court event in Sao Paulo. Both players landed 53.4 percent of their first serves. Stoiana won 59.0 percent of her first-serve points and 47.1 percent behind the second, with no aces and four double faults, and she faced 12 break points, saving eight of them for a rate of 66.7 percent.
