Tiafoe outlasts fellow American Damm in five-set US Open opener

Frances Tiafoe needed five sets to get past fellow American Martin Damm in the US Open first round, recovering from two sets to one down to win 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3 6-4. Damm was the more explosive server, firing 28 aces to Tiafoe's 12 and winning 82.0 percent of his first-serve points, but his margins vanished behind it: he landed 56.7 percent of first serves, coughed up 11 double faults and won only 44.1 percent of second-serve points. Tiafoe's 54.2 percent behind his own second delivery proved the steadier platform, and it carried him into the second round.
