Shymanovich Advances in Guadalajara Qualifying as Ma Retires
Iryna Shymanovich booked her place in the main draw at the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara, leading Lea Ma 7-6 3-0 in the qualifying final when the Frenchwoman was unable to continue. The Belarusian landed only 42.1% of her first serves, but she was ruthless behind whatever she put in play, winning 75.0% of first-serve points and an unusually high 72.7% behind her second, with just one ace and two double faults. Ma, by contrast, found 54.2% of first serves yet took only 53.1% of those points and 40.7% behind her second delivery. That gap explained the 3-0 cushion Shymanovich had built before the retirement.
