Jovic downs Frech in straight sets in US Open first round
Iva Jovic came through a tight opening set before pulling clear, beating Magdalena Frech 7-5, 6-3 in the US Open first round. The American's first delivery was the difference: she landed only 56.3 percent of them but won 77.5 percent of those points, and struck five aces to Frech's one. Frech never found the same protection, putting just 50.7 percent of first serves in and winning only 42.1 percent behind them, a shortfall her 54.1 percent on second serve could not offset. Jovic's four double faults went unpunished, and she moves into the second round on home soil.
