Stoiana edges Yuan in three sets to reach US Open main draw
Mary Stoiana came through a three-set battle with Yue Yuan 6-3 4-6 6-4 in the final round of US Open qualifying. The American took the opener, was pegged back as Yuan levelled, then found enough on serve to close out the decider. Yuan was the cleaner server on the surface, landing 71.6 percent of first deliveries with six aces and a single double fault, but she won only 40 percent of her second-serve points. Stoiana, at 58.9 percent first serves in, won 52.2 percent behind her second, and that margin carried her into the main draw.
