Tommy Paul edges Hubert Hurkacz in three sets in Cincinnati
Tommy Paul came through a three-set battle against Hubert Hurkacz in the Cincinnati round of 64, taking it 6-4 6-7 6-3 after being pegged back in a second-set tiebreak. The American was out-gunned in raw power, striking just one ace to the Pole's 19, but he answered with steadier returns of fortune behind his own delivery, winning 73.0 per cent of first-serve points despite landing only 57.3 per cent of them. The difference came on the second ball, where Paul won 59.6 per cent to Hurkacz's 50.0. Both men served three double faults, and Paul's decider earned him a place in the next round.
