Lajovic Retires in Szczecin as Dedura Palomero Advances; Trevisan Survives a Slow Start in Valencia

The most consequential result of the day in Szczecin was also the least satisfying. Dusan Lajovic, the most recognisable name in the Polish clay-court draw, retired trailing Diego Dedura Palomero 5-1 in the opening set, the young qualifier moving into the second round without having to close out a single completed set. It is the kind of passage that flatters nobody's form line, but it removes a marquee name from the bracket and opens a section of the draw that had looked spoken for.

The rest of Szczecin ran to a firmer script. Daniel Elahi Galan absorbed an opening-set loss to Facundo Diaz Acosta and turned the match around emphatically, taking the last two sets 6-2 6-3 after dropping the first 5-7. Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo was the most economical winner of the session, dismissing Dali Blanch 6-2 6-2, while Filip Pieczonka gave the home crowd its moment, edging Tiago Pereira 5-7 6-4 7-5 in the longest and tightest contest of the round.

In Valencia, Martina Trevisan's afternoon began badly and finished with authority. Beaten 6-1 in the first set by Leyre Romero Gormaz, the Italian reorganised completely, conceding only two games in the second and holding her nerve through a taut decider to win 1-6 6-2 6-4. Rebeka Masarova needed no such recovery, but she did need patience, taking a tiebreak to see off Mina Hodzic 7-5 7-6. Nastasja Schunk was similarly efficient against Oksana Selekhmeteva, 7-5 6-4.

The Spanish contingent supplied the drama. Irene Burillo Escorihuela came through a first-set tiebreak to beat Madison Sieg 7-6 6-4, while Alicia Herrero Linana produced the day's most stubborn escape in an all-Spanish meeting with Lucia Cortez Llorca, losing the first set 2-6 before winning two consecutive 7-5 sets. Jennifer Ruggeri followed a similar path against Eva Vedder, dropping the opener 5-7, surviving a second-set tiebreak and then running away with the third 6-1.

Ljubljana offered a study in contrasts. Dalma Galfi, the highest-ranked name in action there, was clinical against local hope Pia Lovric, 6-4 6-1, and Alice Tubello handled Vivian Wolff 6-4 6-3. Weronika Falkowska had to work considerably harder, recovering from a 2-6 first set and a second-set tiebreak against Kristina Novak before closing out 6-2 in the third.

On the hard courts, Francisca Jorge delighted the Caldas da Rainha crowd with a composed 6-3 6-3 win over Xin Gao, and Anouk Koevermans came through a three-set examination from Elena Micic, 6-2 6-7 6-3. In Sao Paulo, Elina Avanesyan and Nadia Podoroska both progressed in straight sets, over Julia Riera 6-2 6-4 and Lucrezia Stefanini 6-3 6-4 respectively, while Darja Semenistaja beat Hayu Kinoshita 7-5 6-4 and Teodora Kostovic accounted for Victoria Luiza Barros 6-2 6-4 — the two setting up a direct meeting in the next round. Elsewhere, Lloyd Harris survived the day's tightest match, beating Hayato Matsuoka 6-7 7-5 7-6 in Guangzhou, and Harold Mayot recovered from a 1-6 second set to beat Clement Tabur 7-6 1-6 6-4 in Rennes.
