Arthur Fils delivered the cleanest performance of the day at the Cincinnati Masters 1000, dismissing Thiago Tirante 6-3 6-2 in a quarterfinal that never drifted from his control. The Frenchman, ranked 21st, kept the rallies short on a surface that rewards first-strike tennis and did not allow his opponent a foothold in either set. It is the kind of economical win that matters at this stage of a two-week hard-court block, and it earns him a semifinal against the 10th-ranked Flavio Cobolli.
The most notable result away from Ohio came at Challenger Cancun 2, where Roman Safiullin beat Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-4 in the round of 16. The Swiss, still competing at this level to build match rhythm, was broken in both sets and could not extend the contest. Hubert Hurkacz needed rather more work to advance, recovering from the loss of the second set to see off Henrique Rocha 6-2 4-6 6-4.
The rest of the Cancun draw produced a strong quarterfinal field. Sebastian Baez, the highest-ranked man left at 53, saw off Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez 6-4 6-3, and Vit Kopriva was similarly efficient against Gauthier Onclin, 6-4 6-4. Moise Kouame's 6-2 6-2 win over Roman Burruchaga was the most emphatic of the round, while Chak Lam Coleman Wong survived the day's longest examination, edging Alan Magadan 6-4 1-6 7-6. Moez Echargui and Lloyd Harris also progressed, over Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Pablo Llamas Ruiz respectively.
In Quebec City, Luca Van Assche came through the tightest match of the day, holding off Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 7-5 in an all-French quarterfinal decided by a handful of points. Jacob Fearnley and Zizou Bergs were far more comfortable in the round of 16, Fearnley beating home player Alexis Galarneau 6-2 6-3 and Bergs dispatching Andrea Pellegrino by the same pattern, 6-3 6-2.
Roehampton produced an all-unranked final. Oliver Tarvet recovered from a second-set stumble to beat Anton Matusevich 6-2 2-6 6-2, while Lucas Poullain was steadier throughout in a 6-3 6-2 win over Lui Maxted. Prague settled its title match on clay, with Jan Kumstat overpowering Jianu F. C. 6-1 6-4 and Chun Hsin Tseng seeing off Norbert Gombos 6-4 6-2. In Sion, Dominic Stricker was ruthless against Tommaso Compagnucci, 6-2 6-2, and will contest the final against Benjamin Hassan. At Kingston, Pedro Martinez lost the opening tie-break before turning things around against Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, 6-7 6-4 6-3.
Friday's programme is headlined by the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, where third-ranked Jessica Pegula meets fifth-ranked Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, and Coco Gauff, ranked fourth, faces Marta Kostyuk of the same event's quarterfinal round. On the men's side, Cobolli against Fils opens the semifinal stage, while Lorenzo Musetti and Frances Tiafoe complete the quarterfinals, a contrast between Musetti's variety and Tiafoe's flatter, more direct hard-court game.
