The Cincinnati round of 16 was supposed to be the point at which the biggest names asserted themselves. Instead it became the day the draw was torn open, and the clearest evidence came from Sara Bejlek, ranked 35th, who beat Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 6-4. The first set was the match: once Bejlek came through the tie-break, she never surrendered the initiative, closing out a straight-sets win that removes the most feared ball-striker in the women's field before the quarterfinals.
The other half of the women's afternoon offered a study in contrast. Elena Rybakina, the second seed on tomorrow's order of play, controlled Diana Shnaider 6-4 6-4 in a match of long, flat exchanges and few breaks of serve, the kind of low-error performance that tends to travel well on quick hard courts. Rybakina now stands as the highest-ranked player left on her side of the draw, and the loss of Sabalenka reshapes the tournament around her.
The men's round of 16 was scarcely gentler on the seeded order. Tommy Paul beat Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6 6-4 in the day's longest and most demanding contest, recovering from a set down and surviving a second-set tie-break that decided the outcome. Arthur Fils, ranked 21st, was more emphatic still, dismissing Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-4 by taking the ball early and denying the Australian the extended rallies he thrives on. Frances Tiafoe completed the sequence by beating Felix Auger Aliassime 6-3 6-4.
Below the Masters level, the Challenger circuit delivered its usual dense programme. In Prague, on clay, Jan Kumstat came through against Maxim Mrva 6-1 7-5 and Norbert Gombos needed three sets to see off Radu Mihai Papoe 6-1 4-6 6-2. Chun Hsin Tseng was clean and efficient in beating Oleksii Krutykh 6-2 6-4, while Jianu F. C. saw off Rehberg M. H. 6-3 6-4 to complete the semifinal quartet.
Sion produced the day's tightest finish: Benjamin Hassan outlasted Geoffrey Blancaneaux 7-6 4-6 7-6, two tie-breaks bookending a match of fine margins. Lorenzo Giustino recovered from a second-set setback to beat Dimitar Kuzmanov 6-3 5-7 6-1, home favourite Dominic Stricker edged Mika Brunold 6-4 7-6, and Tommaso Compagnucci got past Juan Manuel La Serna 6-3 6-7 6-4.
At Roehampton, Oliver Tarvet ran through the decider to beat Charles Broom 6-4 5-7 6-1 and Lui Maxted was steady in seeing off Gabi Adrian Boitan 7-5 6-4. In Quebec City, Jesper de Jong needed only 6-3 6-1 against Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, while Jacob Fearnley beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 7-5, Aleksandar Vukic saw off Kyrian Jacquet 7-6 6-1, Soon Woo Kwon edged Shintaro Mochizuki 7-5 4-6 6-3 and Alexis Galarneau upset Dino Prizmic 6-4 6-4. In Cancun, Chak Lam Coleman Wong beat Alexandre Muller 6-2 6-2, Moise Kouame dismissed Felipe Meligeni Alves 6-1 6-4, Moez Echargui came through two tie-breaks against Otto Virtanen, and Lloyd Harris and Alan Magadan also advanced.
