Stephens edges Tjen in two tie-breaks in Guadalajara last 16
Sloane Stephens survived a match without a single comfortable moment, beating Janice Tjen 7-6 7-6 to reach the quarter-finals at the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara. Neither woman could build a cushion: Stephens was broken on both break points she faced, while Tjen saved two of four, so each set was settled in a tie-break. Tjen struck 11 aces to Stephens' two, but won just 31.8% of her second-serve points and coughed up five double faults, and that gap behind the second delivery proved decisive. Stephens, landing 76.4% of first serves and winning 72.7% of those points, took her chances when they came.
