Townsend recovers from opening-set tiebreak to beat Maria in Guadalajara
Taylor Townsend dropped the opening set in a tiebreak but turned the match around to beat Tatjana Maria 6-7 6-3 6-2 in the Round of 32 at the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara. The American's edge came behind the ball she hit second: she won 53.8 percent of her second-serve points against 48.9 percent for Maria, and 67.3 percent on first serve to the German's 66.1. Neither found the court consistently, Townsend landing 58.5 percent of first serves and Maria 56.7, but the American struck four aces against three double faults and grew steadier as the match went on, moving into the next round on hard court.
