Monnet edges past Garcia 7-5 6-2 in Guadalajara qualifying
Carole Monnet came through a scrappy serving battle to beat Jose Garcia 7-5 6-2 in the qualifying semifinals at the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara. The opening set stayed on serve until the very end before the Frenchwoman claimed it 7-5, and from there the contest tilted decisively her way. Neither player found rhythm behind the first ball — Monnet landed just 51.7 percent, Garcia 54.5 — and both coughed up nine double faults, but the difference came on the second delivery, where Monnet won 35.7 percent of points to Garcia's 16.7. It moved her within one win of the main draw.
