Noskova edges Kostyuk in three sets to reach US Open quarters
Linda Noskova came through a three-set battle in the US Open Round of 16, beating Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 after surrendering a one-set lead. The serve numbers explained the tightness: Kostyuk was the cleaner striker behind her first delivery, landing 65.6% of them and winning 70.5% of those points, with nine aces to Noskova's none. But her second serve let her down badly, yielding just 40.6% of points, while the Czech won 52.2% behind hers and 61.4% on first serve. Both players hit six double faults. Noskova's steadier second ball carried her into the quarterfinals.
