Townsend outlasts Shnaider in three sets at US Open

Taylor Townsend came through a three-set battle with Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to reach the US Open fourth round. The American controlled the opening set and, after being pegged back in a second-set tiebreak, leaned on her serve to settle the decider, landing 63.6% of first serves and winning 69.1% of those points. The difference lay behind the first ball: Townsend took 51.3% of her second-serve points to Shnaider's 46.9%, and while both players struck five aces, the Russian's five double faults to Townsend's two proved costly. It was a statement result on home soil.
