Zverev outlasts Halys in five sets at US Open second round

Alexander Zverev needed five sets and two tie-breaks to see off Quentin Halys 6-4 4-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 in the US Open round of 64, finally pulling clear in the decider after more than three hours of serving duels. The German struck 29 aces to the Frenchman's 18 and landed 66.2 percent of his first serves, against 55.1 percent for Halys. Both men were near-identical on first-serve points won, 78.8 percent to 78.9, so the margin came behind the second delivery, where Zverev won 49.1 percent to Halys's 41.6 and conceded eight double faults to twelve. Survival keeps his campaign alive.
