Zheng edges past Putintseva in three sets at US Open

Qinwen Zheng came through a three-set battle to beat Yulia Putintseva 6-4 2-6 6-1 in the US Open Round of 64, reasserting control after dropping the second set. The Chinese player's first serve was her weapon whenever she found it, landing only 48.5 percent of them but winning 87.2 percent of those points, along with nine aces. The gap came behind the second delivery, where Zheng won just 30 percent and struck five double faults, giving Putintseva her opening in the middle set. Putintseva was steadier overall, at 67.1 percent first serves in and 52 percent behind her second, but could not sustain it. Zheng moves on to the third round.
