Gauff edges Badosa 6-4 7-6 to reach US Open third round
Coco Gauff came through a tight straight-setter against Paula Badosa at the US Open, taking the second round 6-4 7-6 after a second set that needed a tiebreak. Neither woman found much rhythm on first serve, Gauff landing 50 percent and Badosa 48.8, but the American was the steadier of the two once the ball was in play, winning 71.4 percent of her first-serve points to Badosa's 64.3. The gap was widest behind the second delivery, where Gauff took 57.1 percent against 47.7, and she also trimmed her double faults to five to the Spaniard's six. It was a hard-earned home win in New York.
