Learner Tien beats Gael Monfils in straight sets at US Open

Learner Tien needed no more than three sets to move past Gael Monfils in the US Open Round of 64, closing it out 6-3 6-4 6-3 without ever letting the Frenchman find a foothold. The American's serve was the steadier weapon: he landed 62.5% of his first deliveries and won 80% of those points, keeping his service games short. Monfils, by contrast, found only 48.5% of first serves and won just 37.7% behind the second, a shortfall that eight double faults did nothing to repair. Tien's three aces mattered less than his consistency, and the straight-sets win carried him into the third round.
