Maria fights back from a set down to oust Ostapenko in New York

Tatjana Maria turned a losing start into a comfortable win in the US Open first round, dropping the opening set 6-4 before running away with it 6-1, 6-2 against Jelena Ostapenko. The German's serve steadied everything: eight aces, 75.5% of points won behind the first delivery and a manageable five double faults. Ostapenko, by contrast, unravelled, landing just 48.6% of first serves, winning only 35.1% behind the second and coughing up 15 double faults. Once the errors piled up, Maria's variety did the rest, sending her through in the opening round.
