Kalinskaya outlasts Wang Xinyu in three sets at the US Open

Anna Kalinskaya came through a swinging second-round contest at the US Open, taking the opener 7-5, losing the second 2-6 and steadying herself to close it out 6-3 against Wang Xinyu. The Russian's serve was the shakier of the two on paper: she landed only 63.6 percent of first deliveries and coughed up eight double faults, but she won 50 percent of her second-serve points, twice the reliability Wang managed behind hers at 33.3 percent. Wang struck cleanly when her first ball landed, winning 71.4 percent of those points from a 70 percent success rate, yet five double faults and a leaky second serve undid her. For Kalinskaya, it was a hard-earned place in the next round on a surface where her return work paid off.
