Shapovalov beats Van Assche in straight sets at US Open
Denis Shapovalov moved into the US Open third round with a 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 win over Luca Van Assche, opening with a bagel set and holding on through a third-set tie-break. The Canadian's serve carried him: 11 aces and 71.4% of points won behind a first delivery that landed 59.4% of the time, even with nine double faults on the sheet. Van Assche never found the same footing, putting just 53.9% of first serves in and winning only 56.2% of those points, with 46.3% on his second. For Shapovalov, it was a straight-sets statement on the New York hard courts.
