Svajda beats Altmaier in four sets in US Open first round

Zachary Svajda opened the US Open with a 6-3 6-1 6-7 6-2 win over Daniel Altmaier, controlling three of the four sets either side of a third-set tiebreak wobble. The American landed only 53.6% of his first serves but was close to untouchable when he did, winning 83.3% of those points, and his second delivery held up superbly at 65.4%. Altmaier struck 16 aces to Svajda's eight, yet 12 double faults and just 36.2% of second-serve points won undermined him. For Svajda, it was a composed home-slam performance built on serving efficiency rather than raw power.
