Svitolina survives Joint in three sets at US Open

Elina Svitolina needed three sets to see off Maya Joint 6-2 6-7 6-4 in the US Open second round, recovering after letting a tie-break slip away. The Ukrainian's first delivery was the difference: she won 75.0% of points behind it, compared with just 55.2% for Joint, even though the Australian landed more first serves (60.4% to 57.1%). Second serves offered little comfort to either player, Svitolina taking 40.5% and Joint 39.5%, but Joint's six double faults against her opponent's two proved costly. Four aces and a steadier hand carried Svitolina into the next round.
