Van de Zandschulp downs Choinski in straight sets at US Open
Botic van de Zandschulp opened his US Open with a straight-sets win over Jan Choinski, 6-3 6-1 7-6, controlling the first two sets before surviving a third-set tiebreak. The Dutchman's serve was the difference: he landed 66.7% of first deliveries and won 87.9% of those points, striking 16 aces to Choinski's eight. Choinski served respectably himself, at 64.8% first serves in and 71.9% of those points won, but he could not match that first-serve dominance. Van de Zandschulp's six double faults and 48.3% on second serve, almost identical to Choinski's 48.4%, kept the third set close without costing him the match.
