Gauff opens US Open with 6-3 6-4 win over Sonmez
Coco Gauff needed no more than two sets to move past Zeynep Sonmez 6-3 6-4 in the US Open first round, controlling the match from the baseline and behind a serve that rarely wobbled. The American landed 63.6 percent of her first deliveries and won 71.4 percent of those points, while also taking 66.7 percent behind her second serve, a margin Sonmez could not match. The Turkish player got just half of her first serves in and won only 38.5 percent of her second-serve points, an exposure Gauff punished. Five aces to none underlined the gap on serve.
