Zverev outlasts Sonego in five sets at US Open opener

Alexander Zverev needed five sets to get past Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 in the US Open first round, recovering after the Italian edged ahead by taking the second set and the third in a tiebreak. The serve numbers explained the turnaround: Zverev landed 65.8 percent of first deliveries and won 77.5 percent of those points, against 73.4 percent for Sonego, and his 54.7 percent behind the second ball outstripped the Italian's 48.4. Sonego struck 16 aces to Zverev's 12 and hit only four double faults to the German's eight, but could not convert that edge. Zverev survived a four-hour type of test to reach the second round.
