Monfils drops opener, rolls past Vallejo in US Open first round
Gael Monfils lost the first set and won the next three going away, beating Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-6 6-1 6-2 6-0 in the US Open first round. Once the Frenchman settled, his serve became the difference: he landed just 58.2 percent of first deliveries but won 79.2 percent of those points, and even his second serve returned 52.6 percent. Vallejo, by contrast, was steadily undermined behind his own delivery, winning only 55.7 percent on first serve and 36.8 percent on second, with five double faults. For Monfils, it was a composed recovery and a place in the second round.
