Maria Sakkari came from a set down to beat American wild card Robin Montgomery 2-6 7-5 6-2 in the first round of the US Open. Montgomery struck first behind a bold serving display that brought her seven aces, but her margins were thin: she landed 58.1 percent of first serves and won just 62.3 percent of those points, with 40.9 percent behind the second ball. Sakkari, less accurate at 56 percent first serves in, was the more punishing striker when she found the target, winning 70.2 percent of those points despite four double faults. The Greek survived a scare and moved on.
