Darderi beats Wendelken in four sets in US Open first round
Luciano Darderi came through a four-set opener at the US Open, beating Harry Wendelken 6-2 3-6 6-2 7-5 after surrendering the second set. The Italian's serve gave him the platform: 14 aces against five double faults, 56 percent of first serves in and 64.3 percent of those points won. Wendelken struck 10 aces of his own but landed only 48 percent of first serves and coughed up seven double faults, and his 47 percent return on second-serve points left him short in the closing 7-5 set. Darderi moves into the second round in New York.
