Fearnley outlasts Landaluce in five sets at US Open first round

Jacob Fearnley recovered from two sets to one down to beat Martin Landaluce 4-6 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-3 in the US Open first round. The Briton's serve was erratic all afternoon — just 56.8% of first deliveries landed and he coughed up 16 double faults — but when he did find the box he was close to untouchable, winning 73.9% of those points. Landaluce struck 16 aces and put 66.2% of first serves in, yet won only 64.0% behind them and a meagre 37.3% on second serve, and his own 13 double faults proved costly. Fearnley's reward was a place in the second round.
