Learner Tien needed only three one-sided sets to see off Nuno Borges 6-4 6-1 6-2 in the US Open first round, tightening his grip after taking the opener. The American's serve was the spine of the win: he landed 56.9 percent of first serves, won 75.6 percent of those points and, crucially, 64.5 percent behind the second ball, with no double faults all match. Borges, by contrast, coughed up five double faults and took just 41.2 percent of his second-serve points, an invitation Tien accepted repeatedly. For the home player, it was a clean, controlled start to his campaign in New York.
