Selekhmeteva downs Ito 6-2 6-4 in US Open first round
Oksana Selekhmeteva made a clean start to the US Open, beating Aoi Ito 6-2 6-4 in the opening round without ever surrendering control of the match. The difference lay almost entirely in the second serve: Selekhmeteva won 55.2 percent of those points, while Ito managed just 22.7 percent, a gap that repeatedly handed the Russian openings on the Japanese player's delivery. Ito was the steadier server on first delivery, landing 63.9 percent and winning 69.2 percent behind it, but she could not sustain that platform. Both hit one ace and five double faults, leaving Selekhmeteva into the second round.
