Navarro edges Boisson in three sets in US Open first round
Emma Navarro survived a first-round marathon at the US Open, beating Lois Boisson 7-6 6-7 6-3 after two tiebreaks and a decisive push in the third set. Boisson struck the bigger serve on paper, firing 15 aces to Navarro's 10 and winning 80.0% of her first-serve points, but she landed only 54.5% of them and paid heavily behind the second ball, taking just 36.0% of those points with six double faults. Navarro was steadier throughout, putting 59.6% of first serves in and winning 54.3% behind her second. The American's reliability carried her into the second round on home soil.
