Vacherot Downs Kovacevic in Straight Sets at US Open
Valentin Vacherot opened his US Open with a controlled straight-sets win over Aleksandar Kovacevic, 6-2 6-3 7-5 in the first round. The Monegasque's serve was the difference: 14 aces against three double faults, and although he landed only 53.9 percent of first deliveries, he won 90.2 percent of those points and 65.7 percent behind the second. Kovacevic never found the same footing, making just 46.1 percent of first serves, winning 75.6 percent of them and only 45.8 percent on second, with six double faults. The American pushed hardest in the third set before Vacherot closed it out to reach the second round.
