Kenin beats Venus Williams 6-2 7-6 in US Open first round
Sofia Kenin came through an all-American opening round at the US Open, taking the first set 6-2 and then edging a tight second on a tiebreak to beat Venus Williams 6-2, 7-6. Neither player found much rhythm on first serve, Kenin landing 53.6 percent and Williams 52.6, so the margin came behind the second ball, where Kenin won 53.1 percent of points to Williams's 40.5. Williams also coughed up six double faults to Kenin's four, and struck no aces to her opponent's one. For Kenin, it was a composed start on home hard courts.
