Pliskova recovers from a set down to beat Vandewinkel in New York

Karolina Pliskova needed three sets to get past Hanne Vandewinkel in the US Open first round, losing the opener 2-6 before turning the match around 7-5, 6-3. The serve numbers were almost a mirror image: seven aces apiece, 61.7 percent of first-serve points won for Pliskova against 61.4 for the Belgian, and an identical 40 percent behind the second delivery. What separated them was volume of errors on serve, with Vandewinkel's 11 double faults edging Pliskova's 10, and the Czech landing 60 percent of first serves to her opponent's 58.3. It was a hard-earned place in the second round.
