Shapovalov's 19 aces see off Kecmanovic in US Open opener

Denis Shapovalov came through a four-set opening-round test at the US Open, beating Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-1 after losing his way briefly in the second set. The Canadian's serve was volatile but decisive: only 51.5 percent of his first deliveries landed, and he coughed up 11 double faults, yet he won 83 percent of the points behind that first ball and struck 19 aces to Kecmanovic's three. The Serb was steadier in the basics, with just two double faults, but 63.5 percent of first-serve points won was not enough resistance. Shapovalov's reward was a place in the second round.
