Qiang Wang made a clean start to the US Open, seeing off Colombia's Emiliana Arango 6-4 6-2 in the opening round. The Chinese player controlled the match from the baseline behind a reliable delivery, landing 66.1% of her first serves and winning 75.7% of those points, with three aces and only two double faults. Arango found the court far less often, at 60.9% on first serve, and took just 53.8% of the points that followed, which left her under pressure throughout. Her 57.9% on second-serve points gave Wang a further edge, and the second set slipped away quickly. It was an efficient way into the second round.
