Fernandez cruises past Zhang 6-3 6-2 in US Open first round
Leylah Fernandez needed no more than an hour's worth of control to see off Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-2 in the US Open first round, the Canadian dictating from the opening game and never letting the set scores tighten. Her serve was the difference: 70.3% of first deliveries landed and 77.8% of those points were won, with four aces against three double faults. Zhang, by contrast, found only 65.1% of first serves and won 57.1% behind them, a figure too modest to trouble Fernandez on hard court. The win gave the Canadian a clean start to her campaign in New York.
