Medvedev cruises past Gaston in straight sets at US Open
Daniil Medvedev opened his US Open campaign with a controlled 6-4 6-2 6-4 win over Hugo Gaston in the first round, never allowing the Frenchman a foothold. The Russian's serve was the difference: 10 aces against none for Gaston, 84.8% of first-serve points won and a robust 62.5% behind the second ball. Gaston, landing just 57% of first serves and winning only 63.9% of those points, was left exposed on second serve, where he took 47.8% and coughed up five double faults. It was a straightforward, energy-saving start to the fortnight for Medvedev.
