Van Assche rallies past Norrie in US Open first round
Luca Van Assche recovered from a first-set tie-break to beat Cameron Norrie 6-7 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the US Open first round. The Frenchman landed only 54.7 percent of his first serves, but that delivery was close to untouchable when it landed, winning 84.5 percent of those points along with eight aces. Norrie, by contrast, found the court more often at 67 percent yet won just 57.3 percent behind his first ball and 43.2 percent behind his second, leaving him little margin once the match turned. Five double faults never cost Van Assche control, and he moves into the second round.
