Vekic survives Gibson in three sets at US Open first round
Donna Vekic needed three sets to get past Talia Gibson 6-2 4-6 6-3 in the US Open first round, recovering after the Australian levelled the match. The Croatian was the sharper server on the big points despite a messy line of nine double faults, landing just 54.4 percent of first serves but winning 66.1 percent of those points. Gibson struck five aces to Vekic's four and put only 50.5 percent of first serves in, and her 41.5 percent return on second-serve points was the gap that decided the decider. For Vekic, it was a scrappy but valuable passage into the second round.
