Rus recovers from a set down to beat Bandecchi in US Open qualifying
Arantxa Rus came from a set down to beat Susan Bandecchi 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the final round of US Open qualifying. The Dutchwoman was overwhelmed early but her serve carried her back into the match: she landed 68.4 percent of first serves and won a huge 90.4 percent of those points, the single most damaging number on the court. Bandecchi served accurately at 75 percent and won 82.4 percent behind her first ball, yet five double faults undercut her at the wrong moments. Rus, with three aces to two, closed out the comeback and secured her place in the main draw.
