Svrcina rallies past McDonald to reach US Open main draw
Dalibor Svrcina came from a set down to beat Mackenzie McDonald 4-6 6-2 7-5 in the final round of US Open qualifying. The Czech's serve was erratic — just 51.7% of first deliveries landed and he coughed up seven double faults — but it did enough damage when it counted, with 69.6% of first-serve points won and six aces. The difference lay behind the first ball: Svrcina took 58.1% of his second-serve points to McDonald's 36.4%, an edge that told across the decider. For the Czech, it meant a place in the main draw in New York.
