Wendelken edges Gaubas in three tiebreaks to reach US Open main draw

Harry Wendelken came through one of the tightest matches imaginable in the US Open qualifying final, losing the opening tiebreak to Vilius Gaubas before taking the next two for a 6-7 7-6 7-6 win. Not a single break was needed to settle it, and Wendelken's first serve was the difference: he landed only 53.3 percent of them but won 82.8 percent of those points, against 70.2 percent for Gaubas. The Lithuanian struck 11 aces to the Briton's 10, and their second-serve returns were near identical, 48.2 to 48.0. Wendelken earned his place in the main draw.
