Fery fights back from a set down to beat Kovacevic in Winston-Salem
Arthur Fery recovered from a set down to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 3-6 7-5 6-3 in the Winston-Salem quarterfinals. The Briton's serve grew steadier as the match wore on: he struck four aces without a single double fault, won 81.8% of his first-serve points and, crucially, 61.8% behind his second delivery. Kovacevic had the bigger weapon with eight aces, but seven double faults and only 51.3% of second-serve points won undermined him in the closing stages. Their first-serve percentages were near-identical, 56.4 to 55.7, so the margin came down to the American's shakier second ball. Fery's reward was a place in the semifinals.
