Montgomery rallies past Branstine to reach US Open main draw
Robin Montgomery lost her way early but recovered in style, dropping the opening set 2-6 before running away with the final qualifying round 6-2, 6-2 against fellow American Carson Branstine. The turnaround was built on serve: Montgomery landed 63.4 percent of her first deliveries and won 71.1 percent of those points, a full fourteen points clear of Branstine's 57.1 percent. Montgomery also struck four aces to her opponent's two, enough of an edge to offset her five double faults. With her second-serve points split evenly at 50 percent, she steadied at the right moment to book her place in the US Open main draw.
