Watson edges Fita Boluda in three sets in US Open qualifying
Heather Watson survived a three-set battle with Angela Fita Boluda, 6-4 5-7 7-6, to come through the US Open qualifying semifinals. The Briton did it the hard way: she landed just 54.8% of her first serves and coughed up 10 double faults, but she was ruthless when the first delivery found the box, winning 69.6% of those points. Fita Boluda was the tidier server, striking five aces to Watson's two, putting 72.1% of her first serves in and taking 62.1% of her second-serve points against Watson's 52.6%. Watson found enough in the final-set tiebreak to move a step from the main draw.
