Stoiana rallies past Swan to reach US Open qualifying final
Mary Stoiana came from a set down to beat Katie Swan 6-7 6-3 6-3 in the US Open qualifying semifinals. After dropping the opener in a tiebreak, the American leaned on a steady serve, winning 69.0% of her first-serve points and 57.5% behind her second, a cushion that kept her out of trouble in the closing sets. Swan landed slightly more first serves at 61.3% but won only 61.5% of those points and just 43.9% behind her second, and her seven double faults, against Stoiana's five, proved costly. The win carried Stoiana into the final qualifying round in New York.
