Havlickova edges Uchijima in final-set tiebreak at US Open qualifying

Lucie Havlickova came through one of the longest afternoons of US Open qualifying, beating Moyuka Uchijima 6-2 2-6 7-6 in the semifinal round to reach the final stage. The Czech dominated the opening set, lost her way in the second and then survived a decider that only a tiebreak could separate. Neither player found much comfort behind the second ball: Havlickova won just 37.5 percent of those points and struck nine double faults, while Uchijima managed 32.5 percent with eight of her own. The difference was on first serves, where Havlickova landed 60.4 percent and won 70.5 percent of them.
